Providing for our family
Upon moving to Idaho I had decided that it would be a great time to get into deer hunting. Spencer, my younger brother, and I went last year without any luck. So we decided to try it again this year. On opening day I traveled up to Rexburg and we headed up into the hills east of town. We hiked all over creation and only saw a few doe's. We did see two bull moose that we thought were pretty cool. Two weeks later, the last weekend off the hunt, I met Spencer in Pocatello and two hours later we were in the south east corner of Idaho by Bear lake for one last try. The first group of trees that we walked thorough we pushed out 15 or so doe. We thought that was a pretty good sign. The deer I ended up shooting was a "monster" two point.
We first saw my deer from 450 yards away and decided to try and get a bit closer. We snuck along the top of the hill (see picture below) till we got to the little larger group of bushes on the top of the hill. From the bushes we crept down the hill 20 feet until the sage brush thinned a bit. From there the deer was laying down and was 350 yards away. My first shot was probably low. The deer jumped up and ran up the hill and stopped broad side. Upon my next shoot the deer tumbled forward then ran up the hill a few feet and then went down right were we took the picture below. 371 yards . (thanks to brother Jamin for the binocs and range finder)
The next day Spencer shot his deer. I was a bit less motivated to hike the big hills and trudge through the aspins but we did it anyway. He was going to sit on a hill side while I pushed the deer out of a group of aspins but I never got the chance. Within a few seconds of sitting down he spotted another two point and shot it. We figured we saw 60 deer, 6 of them bucks and all the bucks were two points. We couldn't have asked for a better weekend.
